Understanding laminate flooring

When it comes to wooden flooring products, there are surely plenty of manufacturers in the market, each with its own specialty and advantage. What makes laminate flooring such a popular choice is the fact that these floors do not fade, stain or get dented, being far more resistant to water and scratches than their hardwood counterparts. You can get entry-level laminated flooring if you are looking to install it in areas that have light-traffic, with a warranty ranging between 10 to 15 years.

The layers of laminate flooring

Every laminate flooring comes with 4 basic layers, which are:

Layer 1: Wear Layer- This is the layer at the top, kept transparent so that the design layer is visible. This is from where the durability of the entire laminated flooring comes from, also adding in to the UV protection and scratch resistance of the floor.

Layer 2: Design Layer– The second layer is the design layer, from where the color, character and design of the layer come from. It is generally a 3D or high-definition photographic layer.

Layer 3: The Core: The core layer is where the heart of the plank lies, made using MDF or Medium Density Fiberboard. The thickness here can be anything ranging from ¼ “to 5/8”. The thicker the core, the greater is the stability.

Layer 4: Backing- This layer lies at the plank bottom, just like the top layer. It is what seals the core from excess moisture and adds to the stability.

Layer 5: (Optional) Pad- Having this layer means that you do not need the underlayment pad. A vapor barrier will still be required for those floors where there is a potential for moisture.

Thus, now that you know the basis of wilsonart flooring and other variants, making an informed decision as to which is the best choice for your home should be an easier task!
